When does the EU AI Act take effect?
The EU AI Act entered into force on August 1, 2024, but implementation follows a phased approach. Prohibited AI practices are being enforced first, followed by requirements for high-risk systems, transparency obligations for limited-risk AI, and General Purpose AI rules. You can view the full implementation timeline at artificialintelligenceact.eu.
Does the EU AI Act apply to UK and non-EU businesses?
Yes. The EU AI Act has significant extraterritorial application. Non-EU businesses must comply when placing AI systems on the EU market, using AI output in the EU, providing AI-powered services to EU customers, or operating AI systems that affect people located in the EU. This means UK businesses serving EU markets, US companies with AI-powered apps available to EU residents, and any firm using AI to process EU customer data must all comply.
What are the penalties for non-compliance?
The penalties are substantial. Deploying prohibited AI systems can attract fines of up to 35 million euros or 7% of global annual turnover, whichever is higher. Violations related to high-risk AI obligations can result in fines of up to 15 million euros or 3% of turnover. Less serious infringements may result in fines of up to 7.5 million euros or 1.5% of turnover. Authorities can also order the withdrawal of non-compliant AI systems from the market.
Is this compliance training accredited?
Yes. Our compliance courses are CPD and RoSPA accredited, created by compliance professionals and subject matter experts, and regularly reviewed to ensure accuracy and currency.
